Understanding Kristallnacht
New resources allow us to dive deep into the single event of Kristallnacht from multiple perspectives. This session will engage teachers in an activity to collaboratively build understanding of the event from multiple primary sources. Experiencing this as a student, teachers will then be able to replicate this in their own classrooms to help students understand this critical moment as a foundation for analysis of the events that followed.

Exploring Human Behavior: Conformity and Consent
With the Nazis firmly in power by 1934, they turned their attention to creating a racially pure "national community." Nazism would would have to become normal and no longer revolutionary. This workshop will focus on the methods the Nazis used to get individuals to conform, if not consent, to their vision, and explore the ways that self-interest influced human behavior and decision-making.

This session will explore the fragility of the Weimar Republic and the contrasting moods that characterized its politics and society - excitement, creativity, anxiety and fear. We'll analyze the various factors that ultimately worked to undermine this young and promising period of democracy.

A War for Race and Space
This session will explore the two fundamental driving forces which set in motion World War II in Europe. Racial ideology and "living space" was the Reich's New Order during the first two years of the war. These beliefs had enormous consequences for ordinary people and groups throughout Europe. Through selected readings we will examine in more detail those who benefited and those who suffered in Germany's quest for race and space.

Memory and Action: The Butterfly Project
The Butterfly Project is a call to action through the arts, using the lessons of the Holocaust to educate about the dangers of hatred and bigotry through the painting of ceramic butterflies, permanently displayed around the world to memorialize each of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. In this session, learn about the project while exploring the importance of memorials. Create your own butterfly to take with you as the start of your own butterfly installation.

Judgment and Justice After the Holocaust
How do we consider justice after the Holocaust?  In this session we will explore important questions about how nations restore order, provide justice to victims and prevent violence in the future.  Utilizing both digital resource from Facing History's newest edition of Holocaust and Human Behavior and the companion resource, Nanjing Atrocities, participants will explore lessons with themes of justice and the complexity of individuals who were both perpetrators and rescuers during World War II.
